Operating Instructions

(1) Power On/Off

Press and hold the Power/Measurement buttonfor 3 seconds to turn on the meter. The indicator light will illuminate and the logo screen will appear. After a few seconds, the meter will automatically enter the measurement interface. To power off, press and hold the Power/Measurement buttonfor another 3 seconds.

If the meter is not operated for 5 minutes, it will enter the screen-off mode. If no operation is performed within 1 minuteafter screen-off, the meter will shut down automatically.

(2) Calibration

Auto-Calibration Description

This meter features auto-calibration on startup. For added flexibility, the auto-calibration function can be enabled or disabled as follows:

  • If the meter was turned off manually, it will perform auto-calibration at the next startup.

  • If the meter shut down automatically after 5 minutes of inactivity, auto-calibration will notbe performed at the next startup.

Calibration mustbe performed when the operating environment changes significantly (e.g., drastic fluctuations in temperature, altitude, or humidity). To ensure accurate calibration, always use the original standard calibration plateprovided by the manufacturer.

Dust on the standard plate will affect calibration results. Before calibration, wipe the measuring surface of the standard plate with a cleaning cloth to ensure it is clean and free of debris.

The standard plate is a precision optical component. Avoid direct sunlight exposure and store it properly.Due to environmental factors, the optical data of the standard plate may change over time. Therefore, we recommend sending the standard plate to the original manufacturer or a qualified metrology institute for annual verification (once per year).

(3) Measurement

This meter operates in Basic Modeby default.

Basic Mode is the sample measurement mode, which directly displays the gloss measurement value as a single measurement. Up to 3 groups of measurement data can be displayed simultaneously.

Daily Maintenance & Care

(1) This instrument is a precision optical device. Handle and store it with care. Avoid use and storage in damp environments, strong electromagnetic interference, direct intense light, or dusty areas. It is recommended to use and store the meter under standard laboratory conditions: temperature 20 °C, 1 standard atmosphere, relative humidity 50–70% RH.

(2) The standard plate is a precision optical component. Handle and store it properly:

  • Avoid scratching or impacting the measuring surface with sharp objects.

  • Prevent contamination of the measuring surface.

  • Keep away from direct strong sunlight.

Clean the measuring surface of the standard plate regularly with a soft cleaning cloth dampened with alcohol.

FAQs About  Gloss meter

Gloss is a broad term to describe the reflectivity of a surface. Whereas high gloss is a specific term that has the highest reflectance (usually more than 70 GU). High gloss finishes are shiny, mirror-like, and exhibit more surface blemishes than lower gloss finishes.

There is no generic mathematical formula for gloss value. Rather, it is measured directly with a gloss meter, which compares how strongly reflected light from a sample matches a standard (typically black glass with a known reflectance).

Readings of gloss meters in gloss units (GU) are used to measure shine on the surface. Low GU (0-10) is matte, 10-70 semi-gloss or satin, and above 70 is glossy. Measurement angle is given to the readings: 60° is the normal, 20° is the high gloss, and 85° is the low gloss.

An 80 gloss surface will reflect less light as compared to a 100 gloss surface. Both are said to be high gloss, although 100 GU (or higher) reflects almost as much as a mirror. The distinction can be slight in graphic terms, but major in specific uses.

A gloss meter measures the amount of light reflected from a surface at a specific angle. It's commonly used to assess surface finishes such as paint, coatings, plastics, and paper for consistency, quality control, and visual appearance evaluation.
