In the study of chemical reactions, calorimetry deals with changes in heat (energy and enthalpy). Spectrophotometry is the measurement of the light absorbance or light transmittance to determine the concentration or color of a solution. The first one monitors the thermal processes, whereas the second one addresses the aspects of light and color.


A colorimeter sends light through a solution and measures the amount that is absorbed. It computes the absorbance by comparing the intensity of light before and after passing through. The greater the concentration of the color, the greater is the absorption of the light. It is also possible to quantify the color of the solution.


A colorimeter is used to measure absorbance at selected wavelengths with the help of filters, which is suitable for rapid comparison of colors. A more advanced spectrophotometer has a monochromator. It can measure a larger range of the spectrum of light and is more accurate. You can also get detailed color data at visible and non-visible wavelengths.


A colorimeter is used to measure the intensity of color of a solution by measuring its absorbance at selected wavelengths of light. It is widely applied in chemistry, food, pharmaceuticals, and quality control to determine concentration, track color changes, or product uniformity.


A Spectrophotometer color measuring device objectively determines the color of a surface. It is used wherever accurate color matching, reproducibility or deviation control is needed – for example in quality assurance, product development or incoming goods inspection.

Spectrophotometer color measuring devices primarily perform three key tasks:

Quantify color data: They convert the captured optical signals into standardized numerical values, such as RGB, CMYK, or CIELAB coordinates.
Compare color consistency: They compare the measured color data of a sample against a target or standard to assess color accuracy and uniformity.
